Our dirty little secret
Okay, here’s a little challenge, if you’re up for it: at the end of the day, cleanse your complexion as usual, then take a pristinely white cotton pad, douse it in toner and see how you did. Coming up grubby?
Fret not. You’re not the only dirty girl getting around. The International Dermal Institute (IDI) did some research of their own and it seems most of us have less pure pores than we think. So here’s the plan for cleaning up our act...
Now, none of us here are skincare slouches, are we? So what’s going wrong? Well, the IDI’s research suggests that many of us speed through 20 seconds of cleansing off the multi-tiers of sunscreen, super stay make-up and pollution that’s piled upon our faces every day. And that just doesn’t add up.
But it’s not just a mathematical problem of how long we’re not spending cleansing; it’s also a matter of chemistry. Think of the waxy soup of oil, product and environmental grime that stews on your skin. A quick foamy splash just can’t cut it. According to the ‘like attracts like’ law, to pulverise an oily mess you need an oil-based pre-cleanse prep. Light, non-comedogenic blends of botanical oils like apricot kernel, nut and olive oil are excellent at attracting and surrounding oily debris, allowing water to sweep it fresh away. Then, once the waxy barrier has been dislodged, your usual cleanser can plumb your pores as it’s meant to.
But that’s still no reason to rush. Spend a few minutes massaging the day off, and don’t forget congestion-prone zones like your décolleté and cleavage or the spots behind your ears.
The extra effort’s worth it. Your skincare will sink in better, you’ll glow a watt brighter and you’ll break out less. Plus you’ll pass any future pore purity challenges that come your way. A girl should always be prepared…
