5 fabulous foods to boost your fertility
There are plenty of ‘rules’ about what you can and can’t eat once you’re pregnant, but what about when you’re trying? Can certain foods increase your chance at conceiving? You betcha!
So if you’re thinking of adding a little one to the brood, you might want to take five to read up on these fertility-boosting foods, for you and him (yes guys, you too!) - plus one you should definitely avoid.
Turns out beans really are magical! High in fibre, low in fat, and rich in potassium, magnesium and protein, they’re a great fertility enhancer. A diet rich in plant proteins and low in saturated fat has been shown to lower the risk of ovulatory infertility.
bh tip: Don’t like beans? Throw some lentils, tofu, edamame or nuts into a salad instead.
Leafy greens high in folate and vitamin B, such as spinach and broccoli, work to improve ovulation. And guys, this includes you, too: men who have higher doses of folate make healthier sperm. Greens taste better when you have someone to share them with, anyway.
I bet you didn’t see this one coming! The Nurses’ Health Study found that eating one or two servings of whole milk or - wait for it - whole milk products (ice cream for the win!) daily lowers ovulatory infertility. Skip the skim and low-fat options, because according to the Harvard School of Public Health, they do quite the opposite. Why? Removing the fat from milk upsets the balance of sex hormones, which in turn hinders ovulation.
NUTS & SEEDS
Packed with important nutrients, nuts and seeds are fertility nutrition powerhouses, supplying the body with fibre, protein, mineral and essential oils while helping to prevent testosterone deficiency in men. Get your fix by stocking up on roasted pumpkin seeds (they have far more protein and fibre than raw ones), almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and walnuts.
Salmon produces antioxidants that protect the eggs and sperm from free radicals. This means it can help to prevent chromosome breakage, which is known to cause birth defects and miscarriages. Research also suggests that selenium can make serm more fertile. What’s on the menu for dinner tonight? You guessed it.
And the food to avoid if you’re trying to get pregnant…
Sperm cells are extremely sensitive to dietary toxins, and trans fats (or trans fatty acids), are believed to be one of the major culprits. Research from Harvard University suggests that trans fats can block our reproductive hormonal pathways, and lead to an array of fertility issues. Furthermore, the Nurses’ Health Study found that for every 2% increase in calories from trans fats instead of carbohydrates increased the risk of infertility by 73%, and for every 2% increase in calories from trans fats instead of monounsaturated fats, the risk of infertility more than doubled!
Moral of the story? Steer clear of processed foods, baked goods and fast foods.
