How-to: perfect nails that won't break
Have you always wanted strong, amazing-looking digits that don’t flake, develop ridges or break at the first sign of stress? Nails that look so good, they could be acrylics? Yeah, us too - it seems like an unreachable dream though, doesn’t it?
But let me tell you, it can be done, beauties! We sought the help of Nail Care Expert and Celebrity Manicurist, Mandi Levanah from Revitanail, to get the lowdown on the tips and tricks that will help you banish nail breakages, prevent nail ridges, and stop nail flaking and splitting in its tracks.
bh: My nails are weak and break easily, how can I strengthen them and help them to grow?
ML: If you’re looking to increase your nail strength and flexibility, it’s important to know which strengthener you need to cater for your specific nail problem. Revitanail has two strengtheners: the original Nail Strengthener and the Sensitive Nail Strengthener. If you have nails that have been damaged by acrylic or gel nails then the original Revitanail Nail Strengthener is a four-week treatment to repair flaky, peeling nails leaving them super-strong and resistant to damage. If you have nails that are genetically soft and weak, the Revitanail Sensitive Nail Strengthener is the perfect treatment for more gentle results.
bh: Can nail polish removers damage your nails?
ML: Acetone is an ingredient commonly found in nail polish removers. It’s a solvent that will also break down glues, and other artificial nail treatments but can be extremely drying to your nail and surrounding cuticle tissue. For more of a gentle remover, choose acetone-free formulations and look out for those packed with nourishing ingredients, like Revitanail Conditioning Remover Wipes with Vitamin E. Take extra care around the sensitive cuticle area of your nail.
bh: Do I really need to use a basecoat and topcoat every time?
ML: YES! Absolutely! Basecoat acts as a double-sided sticky tape, it’s designed to adhere to your natural nail, and then to grab onto the polish you apply on top. If you’re in a rush and want to skip a step, skip the topcoat instead, because you can always apply this later.
bh: List your three top tips for keeping nails looking healthy and strong?
ML: Become addicted to Revitanail Nourishing Oil – applying at least 3 times a day. Keep your nails filed at a short or medium length with a very smooth nail file. Always wear gloves when washing up, cleaning, gardening, etc.
