I was lucky enough to win one of these in the Beautyheaven competitions a few months ago and gave it a try for the first time yesterday.
I think pictures speak louder than words, so here's how it went:-
This is what is in the box:-
Here's the Curl Secret Multi Curl up close. It's a striking metallic dusty pink. It weighs 0.5kgs and the swivel cord is two metres long.
It has two different heat settings (the switch closest to the red light): (I) for fine, bleached and/or damaged hair. (II) for normal hair, thick and wavy, or dyed. Or it has the off setting.
It also has three different time settings (the middle switch): 8 - 10 seconds, 10 to 12 seconds and 12 - 14 seconds, depending on what you chose for the heat setting.
It also has a setting for the direction of the curl, or which side of your head you are curling: Left, Right or Alternating.
There is also an interchangeable curl head depending on what curls you what to achieve. I left the 25 mm (tight curl) head on, but the other chamber is for 35mm larger curls (which I haven't tried yet).
So I prepped my hair which is long, dead straight and generally doesn't curl. It is really healthy and shiny and I don't get much hair loss or breakage. I use heat tools on occasion, including the original curl secret (Hubby got it for me for Mother's Day and my daughter pinches it) and a GHD hair straightener (from the Glosscars in 2015 - I know, I'm super duper lucky!!!!!!! which my daughter is too scared to use).
So it recommends using about this much hair. Make sure there are no knots, and you twist it just a little before clamping down on the Curl Secret tongs with the "Important: Always use this side facing towards the head" side...facing towards your head. Because...obviously!
Then it sucks your hair into the chamber while you hope for the best.
When your hair has finished cooking...I mean curling, you hear between 3 to 6 beeps (depending on how long you set the time on the middle switch) and you release the tongs and your hair comes out curly.
I forgot to add in before that there is a red light on the curling tongs, next to the three switches. The red light flashes as the curler is heating up, then remains red when it is ready to go.
There is a slight sizzling sound when you first turn the appliance on. The notes do warn that "When using the unit for the first time, you might notice a little smoke and a distinct odour: this is common and will disappear by the next use. Each time you use the appliance, you may see some steam. Do not be concerned, this could be because of evaporation of the natural oils of the hair, residual hair products (leave-in-products, hairspray etc) or excess moisture evaporation from your hair)."
Always good to know!!
Further down "Please note: It is quite normal to hear a slight noise, similar to a crackle: this is the characteristic noise of the ion generator."
OH. MY. GOSH! Someone save me please!!
My arms are aching, it's been 25 mins so far, and I'm only a quarter of the way through doing my head.
So I was doing okay, and cursing the thing for being so heavy (I can play violin for hours, and finish a Jillian Michaels workout, but this thing is a whole different story!).
I had too much hair twice, and the Curl Secret stopped and beeped at me telling me to release my hair, wait for it to cool before taking a smaller amount.
Right on the very last curl when my arms were about to drop off, my hair actually got caught. And I mean... it knotted and I had images in my head of the video of that girl with the non-adjustable heat hair straightener with her hair coming out in her hand.
I didn't have my hair fall out (at that point), but it freaked me out.
I'm holding a knot. Not the best picture (sorry) with the light reflecting behind me, but that ball you see about the size of a huntsman spider is a knot. I don't like spiders. And I don't like burned knots :-(
An hour later, and a toddler begging for attention, I finally have curls. Can I get a cheer!!
Dances with both arms circling Woot Woot.
I can finally put my arms down now.
I'm not convinced I like the curls underneath. It seemed to me that the rotation to the right worked better than the rotation to the left. I'm baffled as to why.
I need a selfie stick. Or a toddler who can take photos. But I don't have either, so here's another 'after' shot.
And because this isn't entirely a review on the Curl Secret Multi Curl, but just a journey into my first use of it, here's a plug for the other products I used:-
Garnier's Miraculous Oil (I adore this, and haven't had an issue with it so far...except when used in conjunction with this Curl Secret Multi Curl. I'm suspecting it's probably more to do with the Curl Secret Multi Curl because I haven't had any problems with the original Curl Secret).
Kerastase K Curl Fever for people like me who would like their curls to stay put and not get frizzy or static or fall out 10 seconds after you have killed your arms putting them in. Recommended to me by the kind folks at Frank Provost at Hornsby (it's not cheap, but it's brilliant).
And clips. Because I only have two hands although I wish I had four.
So that was yesterday (Tuesday).
My hair stayed curly for hours and hours, and I actually tied it up because it was bugging me (I hate having my hair down). It wouldn't have gotten any knots overnight because of the way I tied it up.
But this morning, just before I hopped into the shower, as I took my hair out, I noticed that there was quite a bit of breakage. And long strands of hair falling out. It wasn't knotty, just hair breaking. With more breaking than I had after my last pregnancy. I was a little concerned.
Then in the shower, I had a couple of big chunks of hair come out. Yikes! I used an awful lot of conditioner so I could gently run my fingers through my hair rather than risk damaging it further, even though my Tangleze brush (see what I did there?) is gentle.
So perhaps I had the heat setting too high? I tried it on both, and the lowest setting wasn't working at all for me.
So I'm not sold on this yet. But I have more testing to do.
On my daughter.
On a lower setting.
Once my arms recover.
So here's my photo for proof, with a bobby pin for proportion reasons. This is just the hair that came out towards the end of my shower. Sad to say the rest went down the drain or into the bin before my shower :-(
Fascinating, Seezora!! SO interesting seeing step by step. I can understand your concern about the breakage - is it worth trying to phone the company and say, "What might I have done that caused this, how do I stop it from happening?"
Is there a specific time that you leave the hair in the curler or does it automatically adjust itself? At this stage I'm pleased I didn't get the one that was available via Beautorium because I can't keep my hands above my head too long and I have hair just to my shoulders. I've felt ever since they were released that they were better for long hair.
I think it will suit your hair brilliantly if you can overcome the issues or toddler can hold it!!!! I'm sure she'd be happy to try! Thanks again for the pics - it's a brilliant effort from you.
Thanks Trish :-) You can adjust the time and heat setting, but you're limited by three variations on that.
I think I'll try it again, and use two different types of heat protectant just to make sure it isn't a problem on my end (ie user error).
But I'm going to wait until I have someone else home to hold the curler for me :D
OMG seezora I am having anxiety attacks on your behalf seeing your hair fall out like that :( wow you are brave to be going to do it again! Only one time did that happen to me, my hair had been stripped from black so it was pretty stressed and I didn't let it dry completely before I used my straightener and it was a little bit damp from product. I passed the iron and that whole chunk of hair came off and I nearly passed out! Please use a good heat protectant if you try again.
I love the look of the curls on you, but not the hair loss and how long it took you! Looking forward to seeing what happens next time
Thanks for sharing Seezora!
Your hair looks great Seezora, I have the original model and hate that beeping - I nearly always put too much hair in and it takes forever to curl ! Thankfully didn't have any hair fall out - not that I noticed?!! You're post is great though looking forward to see how the rest of the testing goes :)
I have this bottle sitting at my desk at work. I more of use it as a refreshing scent. It kind of awakens my mind and gets the thinking power going.
When I bought this essential oil , I more of was expecting the scent of fresh ginger.
Thank you Beautyheaven and Harmony for providing me with the MyBeauty beauty powder to trial.
