Period underwear: Everything you need to know and why isolation is the perfect time to try them
Whether you’ve got no time for tampons, have been researching ways to cut down on waste, or are just plain sick of leaks and stains, chances are you’ve come across period underwear.
And there’s an even higher chance that you were intrigued, but didn’t think it was the right time to try them.
Well, what time could be better than a worldwide pandemic?
The underwear invention has already seen many women swap pads and menstrual cups for the washable, wearable and comfortable period solution. But when it comes to one’s ovaries, most of us would rather road test before taking someone’s word for it.
The Australian-owned brand has always had a 30-day risk-free trial for its garments, but have upped it to 60 days for orders placed throughout April.
Because in between anxiety baking, Netflix bingeing and begging your dog to take you for a walk, trying out the fit and feel of a potentially life-changing product is a no brainer.
But first, questions.
How does period underwear work?
Modibodi’s period underwear look like normal underwear, but features a three layer lining in the crutch. The top layer quickly draws away moisture, the second absorbs and holds it, and the third acts as the safety barrier for extra waterproof protection.
They’re worn exactly the same way as underwear, and it’s likely you won’t need to change them as regularly throughout the day like you do a tampon or pad. Many Modibodi customers report that they wear them for 8-10, and sometimes even 12, hours.
But this is why isolation is a great time to try them, as you can test out how long they last in the comfort of your own home.
How do I know which period underwear to try?
Modibodi garments have four levels of absorbency to choose from, depending on your flow.
You can find a mls guideline on the website to help inform your order, but they do recommend testing it out for a full day at home (isolation strikes gold again) to know which is right and better understand how the technology and your body will work together.
Does period underwear smell?
If cared for correctly, your period underwear won’t smell. The top layer of Modibodi’s lining not only takes care of moisture, but also fights bacteria and stops smells, so there won’t be any noticeable odour while you’re wearing them.
Will I feel wet?
A rational fear, but one that Modibodi says ‘no way!’ to. They’re confident they’re the driest on the market, and as long as you match your absorbency flow, you’ll be dry and protected.
What’s the deal with washing period underwear?
All Modibodi products are machine washable, so caring for your period pants is easy peasy.
The preferred method is a gentle cold wash, and then hang out to dry. If you have a laundry bag you can pop them in, this is a bonus and it’s also important to avoid fabric softeners and strong detergents eg. stain removers, as they can affect the material.
How long does period underwear last?
This will vary from person to person depending on use and level of care, but Modibodi have estimated that a pair can last between six months to two years.
Not bad right? Add 'cost effective' to the pros list.
So now that you know what you’re in for, and the timing couldn’t be better, who’s putting their hand up for period pants?
