How much sunscreen should you apply?
Many people think that the simple act of applying sunscreen is more than adequate for a day out in the sun.
However, according to Dr. Saxon Smith, Dermatologist - Gosford and Sydney, if you fail to apply enough sunscreen then the sunscreen you do apply is often inadequate at providing optimal sun protection.
So, how much sunscreen should you apply? Dr. Smith recommends that you should apply at least 2mg/cm2 to your entire body. Let’s talk about it in teaspoons, shall we?
The average adult should apply at least half a teaspoon of sunscreen to each arm and the face, and at least a full teaspoon of sunscreen to each leg, the chest area and the back. When talking about children, Dr. Smith recommends using a rough comparison to your own size to guide you as to how much to put on For example, if the child is half your size, halve the teaspoon amounts – but remember, it’s always better to apply too much than too little!
And speaking of your kids, Dr. Smith also believes that children should be supervised when applying sunscreen as it’s been shown that, if left alone, most children will only apply a quarter to a half of the correct amount, which means more chance of getting sunburnt.
