Five weeks to summer: healthy eating and summer superfoods
With Sunday barbecues, Saturday night cocktails and every flavour of gelato calling your name, it can be hard to stay on top of your healthy eating in summer. And when it’s 40 degrees outside, the last thing you want to be doing is running around trying to burn off those extra calories. So to help you make the most of summer and look after your body at the same time, we’ve compiled some of the best (and easiest) hot weather healthy eating tips. Plus, we share five hardworking summer superfoods to add to your grocery list.
HEALTHY EATING TIP #1 – Serve seafood
Barbecues don’t have to mean sausages and burgers. Why not throw some prawns, salmon or calamari on the grill instead? Summer is the best season for finding and enjoying fresh seafood, and by making the switch, you’ll be eating foods that are high in nutrients, protein and omega-3 fatty acids (the good fats). As a bonus, they go perfectly with a big green salad so there’s no need to pull out the bread and sauce.
HEALTHY EATING TIP #2 – Snack at work
Yep, you read that right! When you’re rushing from the boardroom to the bar in the summer months, it’s important to eat consistently throughout the day to stay energised and full – and far away from the canapés and cheese platters at the post-work party. Of course, the snacks you stash at the office need to be healthy, so stock up on nuts, dried fruit and celery sticks.
HEALTHY EATING TIP #3 – Eat from your esky
Heading to the beach sans food is a bad idea, especially if you plan on spending a long time there. If you pack an esky full of goodies like fresh fruit, water, yoghurt, pita chips and hummus, you won’t be tempted to head up the road for chips or an cream.
HEALTHY EATING TIP #4 – Make your own icy poles
These aren’t just for kids! Homemade icy poles are a much healthier option than slushies and other frozen delights that are generally packed with sugar. Use freshly squeezed juice and fruit chunks for a refreshing treat without a side of guilt.
5 OF THE BEST SUMMER SUPERFOODS
1. Swiss chard
Also known as silverbeet, this leafy green is low in calories and a rich source of vitamin K, A and C. Throw it in those big summer salads!
Believe it or not, these are bite-sized superfoods! They are loaded with beta-carotene, vitamin C and powerful antioxidants.
Nibble on these to get a hit of vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, potassium and zinc. Oh, and a radish clocks in at just one calorie. What’s not to love?
The pretty blue hue that makes these berries so recognisable is actually a by-product of flavonoids, a natural compound that helps to preserve the brain’s memory function and protect the body from the damaging effects of oxidation and inflammation. Not bad for a little berry!
This nutrient-rich fruit contains so many healthy fats and nutrients, you’d be silly not to eat it. Swap butter and mayo on your salad rolls for this creamy alternative.
